3 seriously injured in Conn. house explosion

SHELTON, Conn. (AP) -- Three men, including the mayor's brother, remained in critical condition nearly a day after they were injured in a house explosion in Shelton.

A nursing supervisor at Bridgeport Hospital said Tuesday morning that Gary Henry and Randy Fera, workers at Pioneer Gas Co., and Luke Lauretti were in critical condition.

Police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Ahern said the workers were changing the home's gas service. He said Lauretti had gone to the basement to talk with them.

Ahern said two others in the house, 53-year-old Debra Duguid and her daughter, left when the workers smelled gas and weren't injured.

Fire and police officials said the cause hasn't been determined, but the workers were trying to light a water heater pilot light.

Pioneer's owner, William Papale, said the explosion was the first in the company's 70 years.
