Thousands of people gathered in lower Manhattan Tuesday to mark eleven years since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. As in past years, the names of the victims killed in the worst attack on U.S. soil were read aloud.

Family members of the victims began reading the names of their loved ones following a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., marking the time when the first hijacked airliner crashed into the World Trade Center in 2001.

Sara Micciulli was just nine months old when her father, William Micciulli, was killed in the north tower of the World Trade Center.  She was among the readers at the ceremony. As the crowd looked on, she told her "daddy" that she'll love him forever.

No dignitaries spoke at this year's ceremony.

Crowds also gathered at the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa., to read the names of nearly 3,000 victims killed.

President Barack Obama attended the Pentagon memorial.

Aided by a Marine honor guard, Obama place a white floral wreath on a metal stand above a concrete slab that said "Sept. 11, 2001 - 937 am." A moment of silence began at precisely 9:37 a.m.

Obama stood with his arms folded and head bowed as a bugler played taps, then raised his hand to his heart as taps concluded.

In the afternoon, the president was to visit wounded soldiers and their families at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Vice President Joe Biden flew to Pennsylvania to deliver remarks at the Flight 93 National Memorial Commemorative Service.
