DETROIT (WJBK) -

In the old fire department headquarters by Cobo, there is a store all the firefighters know about, but you can shop there, too.

"Everyone buys it because it's a brand.  We've been doing this for quite awhile now.  The Firemen's Fund was established in 1867 when firemen didn't have insurance, and now it's rolled into a helping mechanism for the fire department," said Lieutenant Chris Dixon with the Detroit Firemen's Fund Association.

Basically if he can slap a firefighting logo on it, it's there and ready for purchase, even Carhartt.

"We're actually a Carhartt distributor.  That's actually (the) official jacket that all the firefighters wear when it's nice and cold in the wintertime.  Keeps them nice and snuggly," Dixon said.

It's all non-profit.  Debbie Lyon with the Detroit Firemen's Fund Association is like the den mother of this operation.

"The money goes to help sick and injured firefighters.  We pay for some types of their help when they are injured, and if they have run out of sick time with the city, which is possible, then we pick them up and help them with their families," she said.

For now, the Firemen's Fund Store is on the second floor of the old fire headquarters building, located at 250 West Larned.  Soon they'll be moving to the old MGM Casino.
