The NYPD says the suspect accused of shooting a police sergeant in the legs last month in Queens is in custody.

24-year-old John Thomas of Queens, accompanied by a lawyer, was taken into custody by detectives around 7:00 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a Pep Boys located at Liberty Avenue and Merrick Boulevard.

On August 8, Sergeant Craig Bier and his partner were on patrol of an anti-gang unit when they attempted to stop one suspect on a bicycle while another fled the scene on 107th Street in the Jamaica section around 10:30 p.m.

The 44-year-old sergeant was shot in both legs while in pursuit of Thomas after the two exchanged gunfire.

Authorities say a Ruger 9 mm pistol was recovered behind a building on 107th Avenue, not far from where Bier was shot while chasing the Thomas.

The 15-year veteran was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition before he was released a few days later.

Charges are pending.
