A 71-year-old man watching his grandson's high school soccer game has died after a lightning strike.

Fire officials say a person was struck by lightning at Northern Valley Regional High School's Demarest campus in Bergen County, New Jersey, on Friday afternoon.

James Powderley III tells the Bergen Record  that the man was surrounded by fallen branches from a tree that had its bark stripped by lightning.

It happened shortly before 4 p.m. as a large thunderstorm moved through the area.

A medevac helicopter was requested to fly the unidentified man to a hospital, where he died Friday night.

Several of the students complained of a tingling sensation after the lightning strike and were taken to the hospital to be checked out.
