HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) -- North Jersey's largest water supplier is seeking permission to charge a new fee to help pay for repairs.
United Water has joined New Jersey American Water and Aqua New Jersey Water in filing requests for the fee with the state Board of Public Utilities.
The BPU in May approved a plan to allow investor-owned water companies to charge customers a fee to cover the cost of upgrades. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates New Jersey needs $4.7 billion worth of improvements.
State Rate Counsel chief Stefanie Brand tells The Record newspaper while she doesn't like additional charges, updating the system could save money down the road.
United Water's request could boost the typical residential customer's bill by as much as $1.77 per month.

It's also the same price motorists were paying a year ago.The national average price also remained stable, coming in at $3.63 for the second straight week.
