An NYPD officer accidentally shot and killed a bodega worker early Friday morning outside the store in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, police said.

Cops were responding to a hold-up at the Natalie grocery store at E. 169th St. and Franklin Ave. at about 2 a.m. when the man was shot.

Three men entered the bodega and barricaded themselves and two workers inside, according to the Associated Press. A short time later one of the workers left the store, trying to flee and was shot once in the shoulder. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The worker ran "full tilt" into an officer positioned just outside the door with his weapon drawn, said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.

The shooting victim was identified by a cousin as Reynaldo Cuevas, 20.

"The tragedy here of course was that Mr. Cuevas was shot, but I see nothing wrong with the procedure," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. "We want to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Cuevas for their loss."

One of the victims immediately surrendered while two others continued a standoff with police. One of the two walked out of the store about 5 a.m. claiming to be a victim.

Police found the second man tied up inside as part of the ruse, Browne said.

A few blocks away, a police officer either responding to reports of a robbery at the store or possibly chasing a car involved in the robbery was seriously injured, said police.

The officer was expected to recover.

A .32 caliber handgun, a backpack containing $700 in cash, cigarettes and scratch-off lottery tickets were recovered at the scene of the shooting.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
