Army hero dies after taking bullets for girl

David Nelson, 28 David Nelson, 28

A vigil is being held tonight, in honor of a soldier who took the bullets intended for someone else. David Nelson, 28, was visiting neighbors on the street he grew up on when a man drove by and fired shots at a nearby girl.  Nelson pushed her out of the way before he was struck and killed.

This is not the first act of heroism seen by Nelson.  He saved others in Iraq with his quick reaction after a road side bombing. He received a Purple Heart. After completing tours in Iraw and Afghanistan, his army commitment was fulfilled and he returned to Michigan. He went to Specs Howard and was working as a videographer.

Nelson's family is asking for help with funds for his burial.  The vigil took place at the house he grew up in.

The suspected shooter was arrested later that night by Detroit Police. He has been charged with first degree murder. Police are still looking for the driver and the gun.
