More than one million students and approximately 135,000 staff members at New York City's public schools returned to the classroom Thursday following the summer break.
The city Education Department is opening 55 new schools this year including 24 charter schools and 16 new middle schools.
Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott told FOX 5 News students would implement the common core curriculum which calls for deeper critical thinking discussions in all school subjects.
Walcott and Mayor Michael Bloomberg plan to greet children returning to class at a Bronx school on Thursday.
Walcott also will visit one school in each of the other four boroughs.
