Newburgh police: abduction did not happen

New York State authorities canceled an Amber Alert Thursday morning for a child that had been reported as snatched from a Newburgh street.

Police in the Hudson Valley say no one filed a missing person report for a 5-year-old girl who was supposedly snatched off a street Wednesday afternoon and forced into a pickup truck.

Police now say the abduction never happened. Investigators did not find any evidence to back up claims from a group of kids that two men who pulled up near South Junior High School shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday grabbed the girl and hauled her off in the truck.

The Amber Alert had been issued for Interstate 87, the Thruway, in both directions between Exit 20 at Saugerties and Exit 1 in Yonkers.

The Newburgh Police Department is continuing the investigation.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
