Three houses were evacuated in Yonkers, N.Y. after a landlord discovered rifles and handguns in a basement storage space in one of the houses, according to authorities.

The man at 22 Alder St. discovered the items inside a plastic storage box of the multifamily house around 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

The landlord searched the basement after his tenant, an inmate at Rikers Island, had not paid rent in several months, Fox 5 News has learned. The inmate was arrested by the NYPD and sent to Rikers about six months ago.

Two surrounding homes also were evacuated.

Residents told local media that authorities gave them only 15 minutes to leave their homes. They said they were forced to stand outside for hours.

Yonkers police were joined by the Westchester County Hazardous Devices Unit, the FBI and the Yonkers fire department.

Residents were allowed back into their homes several hours later.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
