The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will be spraying pesticide in portions of Brooklyn and Queens Thursday.
The spraying should help reduce mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile Virus.
Weather permitting, the targeted areas in Queens will include area codes: 11214 and 11228.
Aerial spraying will take place in Brooklyn in the neighborhoods in the following area codes 11209,11416, 11417, 11419, 11420.
All spraying will take place between 8 p.m. (Thursday) to 6 a.m. (Friday.)
In case of bad weather, the spraying will take place on Monday, Sept. 10, according to the NYCDHMH.
U.S. health officials say there's been an alarming increase in the number of West Nile cases.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the mild winter, early spring and very hot summer fostered breeding of the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes pick up the virus from birds and then spread it to people.
West Nile virus was first reported in the United States in 1999.
