Newark Mayor Cory Booker speaks at Democratic convention

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -

Newark Mayor Cory Booker has made his highest profile national speech to date.

Booker spoke Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., where he presented the party's platform. It calls for higher taxes on wealthier Americans while backing same-sex marriage and abortion rights.

Booker is co-chairman of the party's platform committee, and has been campaigning for Obama across the country in recent weeks. Speculation has been swirling that Booker, in his second term as the mayor of New Jersey's largest city, is planning to run for governor against Chris Christie, or for a New Jersey U.S. Senate seat.

Besides his speech Tuesday, Booker has been speaking to several other delegations at the convention.
