Former New York City Mayor Edward I. Koch was hospitalized on Tuesday, Fox 5 News has confirmed.

Koch, 87, underwent a blood transfusion at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, according to his spokesman. He was treated for anemia, reported the Associated Press.

He was expected to be released on Wednesday, said George Artz.  Koch felt weak over the weekend while staying with friends in North Carolina.

Anemia is a condition in which the number of healthy red blood cells in the body declines. Symptoms include weakness and dizziness.

"(Patients with anemia) don't have enough red blood cells to carry the oxygen to give you energy. As you get older, your body doesn't produce enough cells. There is a little bit of physiological anemia caused by age," said Dr. Manny Alvarez, FOX News Senior Medical Correspondent.

Koch, a Democrat who often crosses party lines with endorsements, served three terms as mayor from 1978 to 1989.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
