A spinning amusement ride hit a worker in the head and killed him at a Brentwood, Long Island carnival Saturday night.
Michael Austin was coming off of a break from his job at The Feast of Mother Cabrini fair when he bent down and reached under the SCAT ride to grab something. When Austin stood up, he was struck in the head by the ride
Suffolk County police say Austin, 22, of Mastic, was knocked him to the ground. He was transported to Stony Brook Hospital via Suffolk County Police helicopter where he was pronounced dead.
None of the Scat's 16 riders was hurt. The ride is one of several at the fair that is being held at Suffolk County Community College, located on Crooked Hill Road.
Austin's employer, Pete Zorlenzan, says Austin worked for him for several weeks. According to Zorlenzan, safety procedures call for operators to wait until the ride is stopped before stepping beneath it.
Zorlenzan talked with the Labor Department and Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration representatives Sunday.
Organizers say the ride was found to be working properly.
