Police in Rye are investigating an assault in a retirement community.

A 71-year-old woman woke up about 2 a.m. and saw an intruder in her apartment, cops said. He attacked her with a kitchen knife with a 5- to 6-inch blade, authorities said.

A surveillance camera picture of the alleged attacker shows him wearing a camouflage-style hat to cover his face as he enters the garage of the victim's building.

The woman fought him off and grabbed the knife.

Police don't believe this was a random attack because there were no signs of forced entry and nothing was stolen.

The woman is a beneficiary of her late husband's $15 million estate. They married 11 years ago after the death of his wife. He died 3 years ago.

Several years ago she had also been involved with a lawsuit over her former dental practice.
