Off-duty cop hits runs over man outside ferry dock

NEW YORK (AP) -

A homeless man who was assaulted at the Staten Island Ferry terminal in St. George was then struck by an SUV driven by an off-duty officer on his way home from work, the NYPD said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the man in his 50s was lying in the road outside the terminal on the Staten Island side early Thursday when he was struck by the officer's vehicle. The officer called authorities immediately.

The man was taken to a hospital in serious condition with a fractured pelvis.

Kelly said the man had been assaulted by two others who left him lying on the street after he caused a ruckus inside the terminal.

His name was not released.
