Authorities say a Hudson Valley woman was found sleeping in a bed with her 3-year-old son and a loaded handgun between them.
Police in the Orange County town of New Windsor tell the Times Herald-Record of Middletown that family members received a call from the boy on Tuesday morning saying he couldn't wake up his mother. Police were notified, and when nobody answered the door, two officers entered the home through an open window.
Inside they found the 20-year-old woman sound asleep with the boy beside her and a loaded 40-caliber pistol on the bed. Other guns and ammunition were nearby.
Police say the woman had smoked marijuana before falling asleep. She was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and marijuana possession.
The boy is staying with relatives.
