Speaker Silver says no other sex settlements

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's spokesman said there are no other sexual harassment settlements involving his chamber beyond the $103,000 deal in June to end claims against an assemblyman.

Silver spokesman Michael Whyland said the speaker engaged in no other settlements outside the ethics committee process.

Whyland was clarifying Silver's statement Wednesday afternoon that appeared to indicate there could be more sex harassment settlements that haven't been disclosed. The June agreement was announced Monday.

Silver said he welcomes a probe by the Joint Commission on Public Ethics that he said will pierce the confidentiality agreement requested by the victims in that case.

He said the investigation would show he agreed to the settlement using public money at the request of the victims, not as a cover-up.
