World War II bomb causes airport evacuation

MYFOXNY.COM -

Part of Amsterdam's Schiphol airport - one of Europe's busiest airports - was evacuated on Wednesday after workers found and unexploded bomb from World War II.

Airlines were forced to delay and cancel flights.

The airport issued a statement saying the bomb was found during construction work around the busy Terminal C.

Authorities said a bomb disposal unit was to transport the bomb to an area outside of the airport facility in an effort to defuse it.

The airport told passengers to expect more cancellations and delays.

The 500kg bomb, believed to be German, was buried underground.  Terminal C and parts of Terminal D were evacuated.  Schiphol was a military airport during World War II.

Earlier in the day, two F16s escorted a plane to the airport after what was described as a "miscommunication".  That incident was first described as a possible hijacking.
