Driver freed after serving 6 months for crash that killed guardsman

Posted: Updated:

Less than a year after a judge called a Maplewood man a "danger to public safety," he is now out of jail after serving half of his sentence.

Anthony Mancheski's release came as a surprise to Sgt. Brian Jacobson's family, who say they are not happy he is a free man before his November release date. Though there's no doubt Mancheski did serve time for the fatal crash, Jacobson's loved ones say they can't help but wonder if justice has really been served.

Still, after six months behind bars, most people would hope that Mancheski had learned to take responsibility for his actions; however, his mother told FOX 9 News he's still trying to figure out who "caused the whole thing to start."

"He's happy to be out," Linda Mancheski told FOX 9 News. "He just wants to know what happened to the person who started the whole accident."

Investigators say Anthony Mancheski had been speeding and weaving in and out of traffic, causing a chain-reaction crash that killed Jacobson, a member of the Minnesota National Guard, on Highway 61 near Hastings two years ago.

However, his mother said she does believe her son learned.

"He's always telling people to slow down when he's in the car with them," she said.

After Anthony Mancheski pleaded guilty to felony criminal vehicular homicide, a judge sentenced him to a year in jail. Instead of spending that full term, he was released on Monday morning -- on the same day Jacobson would have celebrated his 37th birthday.

Jacobson's sister said the family is still struggling with the news of Mancheski's release, especially since it happened on the day of her brother's birth.

"It just seems awfully short, to get out on good behavior when you have killed someone," Sarah Parker said.

State guidelines typically call for inmates to serve at least two-thirds of their sentence, but Washington County Community Corrections said Anthony Mancheski earned additional time off for good behavior and for working in the jail laundry.

As part of his probation, Anthony Mancheski is not supposed to use any drugs or alcohol, and he is not allowed to drive for 10 years.

Linda Mancheski told FOX 9 News her son plans to find work to pay the fines and restitution he has as a result of the crash.
