Cops: Drunk man steals, crashes garbage truck

An upstate man is accused of going on a drunken joyride in a stolen garbage truck.

It happened early Tuesday morning in Rockland County.

Ramapo police received a report of a garbage truck hitting an unoccupied school bus in front of 766 North Main St. in New Square.

They they were at the scene, police got a report of a garbage truck stuck on the lawn of 35 Sandy Brook Dr. in New Hempstead.

When they got there, they found Chaim Sirkis, 23, of New Square and arrested him.

They say he was drunk at the time and tried to kick out the windows of the police car he was put into after his arrest.

Sirkis now faces several charges including grand larceny, possession of stolen property, criminal mischief and traffic charges.

Police say Sirkis already had an outstanding arrest warrant. Sirkis was being held in the Ramapo Police Dept. awaiting arraignment.  They say he refused medical attention.
