The wake for Steven Ercolino, who was killed outside the Empire State Building, is being held at the Ballard Durand Funeral Home in White Plains.
After shooting Ercolino, his former co-worker Jeffrey Johnson pulled his gun on two police officers. They opened fire on Johnson, killing him.
The medical examiner said Johnson died from nine gunshot wounds to the chest.
Nine bystanders were hit by bullets or fragments from the officers' guns.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said there will be an investigation, but he is standing by his officers.
Friends said Johnson was an avid bird watcher and a loner even within the close bird watching circle. Friends say he only came out of his shell around dogs.
I spoke exclusively to his sister, who said "it's a loss for a lot of people. That's all I'm going to say."
