Repair work has been completed on a water main in Yonkers but a boil water advisory remains in effect.

The Saw Mill River Parkway has also reopened after the break caused the road's closure.

Residents and businesses in southwest Yonkers were still being advised to boil water before drinking or using to prepare food as a result of the break.

Concrete poured around the pipe is expected to harden by Wednesday afternoon.  After that, water will be systematically and slowly flushed from the mains through some fire hydrants in the area.

Thursday morning, after that flushing is completed, the Westchester County Department of Health and the Yonkers Water Bureau will take water samples from 21 locations throughout the affected area.

Those samples will be tested at the Westchester County Laboratory in Valhalla and at the City of Yonkers Bureau of Water's Laboratory for coliform bacteria.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano says the break was caused by a private contractor installing fiber optic cables. As many as 50,000 residents have been affected.
