Federal Aviation Administration officials say two people were injured when a small airplane crashed shortly after takeoff at the East Hampton Airport on Long Island Sunday afternoon.
Officials said the small Mooney plane went down at about 5:20 p.m. The two people onboard were airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital. Their names were not released and officials do not know if they were seriously injured.
About 30 people standing outside the airport to protest the noisy air traffic witnessed the plane flying low over a fence that separates the woods from the airport before it crashed.
One witness said a man who was driving nearby the crash scene made his way through the fence and pulled both people, and man and a woman, out of the plane. Emergency crews arrived moments later.
A FAA spokeswoman said they are investigating the crash along with the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board).
East Hampton Airport is located on the eastern end of Long Island and according to the airport's website, it serves a mix of private pilots, charter flights and commercial businesses.
The airport was temporarily closed during the investigation.
