Police stand guard in front of Empire State Building

Extra security measures took place outside the Empire State Building the day after a gunman killed his former co-worker.

Nine others were wounded when the gunman was shot and killed by police. The scene could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for a quick-acting construction worker who alerted police and pointed out the suspect.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly now says all of the injured were struck by bullets or shrapnel from guns fired by officers.

Observation deck tour workers who were there on Friday remain rattled after what they witnessed.

"Everybody is still pretty shaken up, nothing is normal around here," said Nykiem Green of NY Sky Ride tours.

What's it like coming back to work? It's too soon, but New York and show must go on," said tour worker Miguel Castro.

A scene some say that could have turned much uglier if not for construction worker John Sullivan and his co-workers.

"We heard a shot and we looked over and saw a guy shooting again, probably 2, 3, 4 more times. I don't know for sure but I was scared," said Sullivan.

They saw Jeffrey Johnson unload several rounds into his intended victim former co-worker Steven Ercolino. The two men reportedly had a long running dispute that went on for over a year.

Sullivan told Fox 5 News he immediately yelled for help and police were quickly alerted.

"We started screaming "the guy in the suit, the guy in the suit", he looked at us -- we thought he was going to shoot at us and we all backed up," said Sullivan.

Johnson kept walking and slowly turned the corner up Fifth Avenue.

"As soon as we lost sight there we heard ‘booom boom boom booom' and that was it," added Sullivan.

Saturday NYPD detectives were at Johnson's apartment searching for answers and wanted to know exactly why it came to this.

All nine people were shot by the two officers -- three of them injured by gunshots and the others by flying shrapnel.
