GRAPHIC VIDEO: cops shoot Midtown gunman

MYFOXNY.COM -

The NYPD has released security camera video of two police officers confronting a gunman who had just shot and killed a former coworker just steps from the Empire State Building on Friday morning.

The gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, 58, of Manhattan, shot his former boss Steven Ercolino, 41, in the head, killing him, on West 33rd Street, police said.

The two had a history of tensions, according to coworkers at Hazan Import. The company fired Johnson about a year ago, police said.

The video shows two officers jogging after a man identified as Johnson. The video shows Johnson turning to face the cops while pointing an object at them. The NYPD said the object was a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun.

The video shows passersby scattering as the officers fire on Johnson, felling him.

In all, nine people were wounded, most likely from the cops' own stray bullets because Johnson apparently did not manage to fire any shots before cops took him down.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Mike Bloomberg did say that some of the wounded bystanders may have been hit by the officers' bullets.

One of the wounded victims, Robert Asika, told reporters he is convinced a cop shot him in the arm. He said he didn't blame police.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said Johnson was hit at least seven times, the AP reported.
