The New York City public school system is getting dozens of new salad bars donated by food store chain Whole Foods.

A total of 57 salad bars will be installed in city schools, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Thursday.

The announcement came at the opening of a new Whole Foods Market on East 57th Street in Manhattan.

The 38,000 sq. foot store will be a part of the campuses for P.S. 59 and the High School of Art and Design, opening in September.

New York City has already installed more than 1,000 school salad bars and hopes to have them in all public schools by 2015.

Bloomberg said that giving every student access to fruits and vegetables helps to fight childhood obesity and gets kids started on a healthy habit for life.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
