Poll: most opposed to sugary soda ban

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- A new poll shows that six in 10 New Yorkers are opposed to Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed crackdown on super-sized drinks.

The mayor wants to stop bar restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas, food carts and delis from selling sodas and other sugary drinks in servings larger than 16 ounces. It doesn't affect diet sodas.

The proposal is expected to be approved by the Board of Health on Sept. 13.

According to The New York Times poll, half of New Yorkers drink at least one soda a week. A third said they drink several per week. One in six said they did not drink soda.

The poll surveyed 1,026 adults by telephone on Aug. 10-15. It has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
