NEW YORK (AP) - Applications are being accepted for the first class of computer science students at New York City's new applied sciences campus.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Cornell University said Wednesday that applications for the so-called "beta" class at CornellNYC Tech are due Oct. 1.

About 20 students will be admitted to the 1-year master's program that starts Jan. 2013.

The school is a collaboration between Cornell and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

It will be housed in space donated by Google in Manhattan until its permanent home on Roosevelt Island opens in 2017.

Additional programs are planned in electrical and computer engineering, information science, and operations research and information engineering. There will also be a tech-oriented MBA program, and planning is under way for a 2-year Master of Science degree.
