Suspect in Detroit Princess shooting getting special treatment?

"We're asking the office of Kym Worthy to please do her job," James Galen said.

The attorney representing the victims involved in the Detroit Princess shooting came down strong on the Wayne County prosecutor.  He claimed there is more than enough evidence to charge the alleged shooter, yet 29-year-old Latoiya Mitchell is still a free woman.

"A potential time bomb waiting to go off and shoot what?  Six more people?" Galen said.

It was the early morning hours of August 9 aboard the Detroit Princess.  Audrey Fox said she was hit in the face by Michael Thomas, Mitchell's husband.  That argument carried over to land where police have said Mitchell went to her car, grabbed her registered revolver and fired into the crowd, striking six people, five of them still bandaged and at Tuesday's press conference.

"It was just a nightmare that we can't wake up from," said shooting victim Demetria Fox.

It was Audrey Fox's sister who we're told fired back and hit Thomas in the back causing the couple to flee the scene and some believe stopping the hail of gunfire.

After dumping her husband at the hospital, Mitchell took off, a week later eventually turning herself in, and then in a surprise move released.  The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said there wasn't enough evidence to charge her, and despite the fact that investigators have said the prosecutor's office has video of the shooting, nearly 60 witnesses and 911 calls, still no charges.

So what's the hold up?  Galen made a serious allegation.

"It has come to my understanding that the suspect's grandmother has a close personal relationship with Kym Worthy."

So we tracked down Mitchell's grandmother to find out.

"No.  I do not know her.  You all have my granddaughter painted as the bad person.  Those people that are talking to you are the ones (that) jumped on her and her husband.  I do not believe in guns, but had she not had one, (she) and her husband would've been dead," said Charlotte McGlory.

The prosecutor's office responded to the claim saying Worthy is not aware of any connection and that's not the reason the suspect was released.

However, for the attorney who has seen the evidence, "Something is keeping her out because I've had much lesser cases with much less probable cause charged and people put in jail and held on high bonds for much less evidence than we have here.  That is suspicious."

The prosecutor's office also said in that statement that when police complete the investigation, they plan to review the warrant again and decide whether to issue charges.
