Boy and 911 dispatcher honored for saving toddler's life

MINNEAPOLIS -

A 9-year-old Minneapolis boy and a local 911 operator received a national honor on Monday for their response in helping save a 2-year-old girl's life on May 5.

The young hero, Rodrigo Sosa, called 911 after his 2-year-old sister, April, fell unconscious following prolonged seizure and would not wake.

Lori Patrick took Sosa's call that fateful day. She has spent 17 years working for Minneapolis 911.

"This call stood out because of his age. He was calm, able to articulate what was going on as well as translate for his mom," Patrick recalled.

Even with his mother crying in the background, Rodrigo Sosa kept his cool and stayed on the line while EMS dispatcher Thomas Polzin tried to diagnose what was wrong.

Sosa is the only member of his family that speaks English. The boy kept calm and composed while making the call with Patrick. He helped guide the Hennepin County Emergency Medical Service Team to his home, and they were able to quickly assess the situation.

The pair were honored during an award ceremony that kicked off at 6:45 p.m. Monday in the Minneapolis Hilton Ballroom, and both were recognized as "Local 911 Heroes" by 911 for Kids.

The 911 for Kids Local 911 Heroes program was established in 1999 to recognize heroic youngsters who called 911 to save a life or to report a crime. The heroes are nominated by local 911 dispatch centers.
