Six Flags to end Wild Safari drive-through

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, N.J. (AP) -- Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey will be closing its animal sanctuary a month early this season and says in the future it will no longer let visitors drive their own vehicles through the park.

The amusement park in Jackson announced Monday the Wild Safari portion of the park will shut down Sept. 30 except for some previously scheduled VIP tours.

Six Flags lets visitors either drive their own vehicles through its 350-acre animal sanctuary or take guided bus tours.

Six Flags says all animals will remain at the park. But it won't provide further details until 2013 season plans are announced Aug. 30.

The animal park has had more than 10 million drive-thru visitors since 1974. It's home to 1,200 animals including giraffes, elephants, rhinos and lions.
