Advocates call for ban on horse-drawn carriages

MYFOXNY.COM -

Horse advocates are pushing for a ban on carriages in Manhattan after a scared horse broke free from a carriage and ran into traffic Thursday.

The Coalition to Ban Horse Drawn Carriages is demanding Mayor Michael Bloomberg shut down the horse-drawn carriage business.

This comes after Oreo, the carriage horse, broke free from its driver, bucked his passengers and ran down Ninth Avenue, crashing into cars before it was corralled on 57th Street.

Witnesses say the carriage driver was dragged down Ninth Avenue as the carriage crashed into cars and broke apart.

Oreo was not seriously injured and is being kept off the job until he can be cleared by a veterinarian.
