A Caribbean flamingo hatchling has taken its first steps at the Bronx Zoo, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.

The chick spends time on a nest mound in the pond outside of the Aquatic Birds exhibit.

Flamingos are hatched with white downy plumage but develop the pink coloration from pigments in the algae, crustaceans, and other invertebrates that make up their diet, according to the WCS.

In the wild, flamingos live in shallow bodies of salty water and feed by sifting through the mud and silt.

The summer, Bronx Zoo researchers and other scientists tagged and released young flamingos at Inagua National Park in the Bahamas to track their migration to breeding colonies throughout the Caribbean.

The Wildlife Conservation Society works to protect wildlife and wild places around the world. The group manages the Bronx Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Central Park Zoo, and Coney Island Aquarium.
