State reinventing education in failing Detroit schools

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

15 Detroit Public Schools got a failing grade from the State of Michigan this past school year. Those schools will now be reinvented by the state's Education Achievement Authority.

Under the Education Achievement Authority rules, 15 DPS schools will have:

  • 210 school days per year
  • 7.5 hours of class per day
  • No grade levels
  • Master material or stay where you are

The new model is already in place at Central High School where classrooms look more like cafes.

The schools will have younger teachers, some right out of college, along with educators from Teach for America. Other retrained DPS teachers will also work in the schools.

Businesses will also team up with the schools to teach students about real-world situations.
