Tucson woman pleads guilty but insane in poisoning

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson woman who tried to poisoning her fiance's mother so she could become the mother to his younger siblings will be sent to the state mental hospital instead of prison.

A plea agreement reached between Pima County prosecutors and lawyers for 23-year-old Tina Beerens will see her placed under the jurisdiction of the state for between 5 and nearly 15 years.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (http://bit.ly/QIuKxt ) that Beerens pleaded guilty except insane to attempted first-degree murder and adding poison to food charges on Thursday.

She can be released from the Arizona State Hospital in Phoenix only if doctors find she's no longer mentally ill or a danger to herself and others.

Tucson police say Beerens put ant poison in ice her fiance's mother used.
