NYPD sends bills to towns who poach rookies

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City is sending bills to municipalities that poach its recent police academy graduates.

Officials tell the Daily News that the officers in question all took jobs in counties outside New York City just months after their December graduation.

Bills of around $50,000 each have been sent to the Clarkstown Police Department in Rockland County; the Pelham Fire Department in Westchester County; and the New York State Police.

None of the departments that received bills have contested the charges to date.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says other municipalities could be billed as well.

A state law requires municipalities to pay the training costs if they poach an officer from another agency within three years of his or her graduation.
