Officials, victims speak out about NYC gun violence

While some New York officials called for stepped-up efforts to combat illegal guns and gun violence in the city, some victims and their families are also speaking out.
Jamella Thomas cradled her 15-year-old son in her arms, her hand gently touching the spot where a bullet lodged in his chest, as she told their story to Fox 5. Her boy was one of four wounded while playing basketball at fish playground Monday night.
Cops said he was not the intended target; he was just another innocent victim.
During the interview, Jamella hid her son's face for his protection because the gunman has not been caught.
The shooting is the latest in a rash of gun violence on city streets this summer.
On Thursday a broad coalition of leaders came together at city hall to call on Albany to enact tougher gun laws.
Many parents in the neighborhood say they're running out of ideas of how to keep their kids safe.
Jamella thought by giving her son a 7 p.m. curfew she was keeping him safe. He was shot at 6:30 p.m.

Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) is asking New York colleges and universities to place tougher standards that would make it hard for students to abuse stimulants like Adderall. Schumer during a Sunday afternoon press conference said between 15 and 35 percent of college students frequently use Adderall to stay up to study. He said students shouldn’t be able to get amphetamine-based drugs like Adderall without a legitimate diagnosis and prescription.
