MALTA, N.Y. (AP) -

State police have released the name of the Albany-area man who was killed in a crash that split his sport utility vehicle in two.

Troopers say 27-year-old Christopher Harvey of Malta was headed south on Interstate 87, the Adirondack Northway, when the crash occurred between exits 11 and 12 in his hometown around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed when Harvey tried to pass a tractor-trailer on the right shoulder area of the three-lane highway.

The SUV left the road, hit a highway sign and continued up an earthen embankment, where it hit a tree and came to rest alongside the shoulder. Troopers say Harvey's Ford Explorer was split into two pieces.

Harvey was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted at Saratoga Hospital.
