A Brooklyn man is accused of stabbing his mother more than 40 times in a brutal murder.

The NYPD says that Richard Cohen, 31, attacked his mother inside their Ocean Ave. home at about 10:50 p.m. on Saturday.

64-year-old Anne Cohen was rushed to New York Community Hospital but it was too late.

Police say that Cohen called 911 to confess after the vicious attack.  He reportedly has a history of mental problems.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that there was a history of violence with the family.

"There was a record of domestic violence in that household, particularly between the son and the mother," Kelly said.

A neighbor said that Cohen had once held his mother hostage.

Cohen was being held without bail.
