MYFOXNY.COM -

A man who was shot and killed by NYPD officers in Times Square on Saturday was identified as an ex-con who had a previous arrest for threatening officers with a screwdriver.

51-year-old Darius Kennedy of Hempstead, Long Island was shot by officers after he lunged at them with a large kitchen knife.

Authorities say the incident began when an officer approached Kennedy because he was smoking marijuana.

Kennedy ran and was chased by police through the streets before they pepper sprayed him after he refused to drop the knife.

That didn't stop Kennedy and police gunned him down after he lunged at two officers.  Officers fired 12 shots.

Kennedy had a history of marijuana arrests, according to police.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly defended the officers who shot Kennedy.

"This individual was arrested for doing roughly the same thing with a screwdriver in Manhattan," Kelly said yesterday.
