A stranded jet-skier looking for help was able to get through JFK Airport's state-of-the-art security system by walking unnoticed across two runways and into a terminal.
It happened on Saturday night.
Daniel Castillo, 31, of Howard Beach was able to breach motion sensors and closed-circuit cameras of the $100 million Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) meant to safeguard against terrorists.
Authorities say Casillo was at a bar with friends in Rosedale when they decided to go out to race their jet skis.
The trouble began when Casillo's broke down in Jamaica Bay at around 7:45 p.m. and his friends left him behind.
Castillo decided to swim three miles toward the lights of Runway 4-Left, which sticks out into the bay.
Castillo reached land and climbed the eight-foot high fence. Dripping wet and in a bright-yellow life jacket, Casillo walked across that runway and intersecting runway 31L - and made it all the way to Terminal 3.
He was stopped by a Delta Airlines worker near Gate 10. The Port Authority says it took immediate action to increase police presence on the ground and in the water.
The Port Authority says that it is reviewing the incident. The PA also said that it plans to meet with PIDS maker Raytheon this week about the breach.
Castillo was charged with criminal trespass. Sources told Fox 5 News that Castillo had snails in his shoes when he was booked.
