Two powerful earthquakes hit villages near the city of Tabriz just 11 minutes a part.

The two quakes measured a magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Iranian state television report at least 180 people have been killed and about 1,300 have been injured.

The TV report says the quakes hit three towns in East Azerbaijan province. At least six villages were totally leveled, and 60 others sustained damage ranging from 50 to 80 percent.

A high number of aftershocks have been recorded. At least 10 aftershocks jolted the same area and were felt in a wide region near the Caspian Sea.

Authorities believe the death toll could rise as rescuers attempt to reach people trapped under rubble.
