MYFOXNY.COM -

SpongeBob, the 33-pound cat who became  a celebrity in New York City earlier this summer, has died.

He was 9 years old.

The fat feline suffered from an inoperable heart growth and died on Aug 3rd.  The news was announced on his website.

The vet discovered a large mass in the cat's chest that had actually pushed his heart out of place and was putting pressure on his lungs. This mass was not detectable during his last x-ray less than two weeks ago. That meant it was growing very quickly.

The mass was surrounding his heart and pushing it to the wrong side. It was also putting pressure on his lungs, giving him trouble breathing.

Surgery was not an option. Doctors said the high dosage of anesthesia required for a cat his size would have killed him.

SpongeBob was adopted by a SoHo animal shelter a few months ago after his owner had moved to a nursing home.

The Animal Haven shelter says that SpongeBob was put on a strict diet and exercise program upon his arrival.
