Out & About: Kayaking in Wyandotte

WYANDOTTE, Mich. (WJBK) -

"There [are] a lot of different people who kayak," said Jera Monticello.

And if you're one of them or if you want to be one of them, check out the ladies at Riverside Kayak Connection.

"We offer classes.  We are a retail shop also, and we have tours.  We also offer demo days so that if you are interested in buying a boat, you can come in and try it first," said Tiffany Vandehey.

But how do you know which kayak to choose?

"First of all, we always ask where you're going to paddle, the body of water that you're going to go on because there are a lot of different boats out there and figuring out what the proper boat is for the proper body of water," Monticello said.

"You need basically four things," she added.  "Lifejacket, whistle is a Coast Guard requirement so you can sound if you're in trouble.  You're going to need a paddle and a kayak, and that's all you really need to get started."

Once we hit the water, Vandehey assured me there are no tippy kayaks, only tippy people -- comforting words.  Lucky for me, I managed to stay upright through the trip down the river.

So we made it out unscathed, no capsizing, and the best part about it, it was a workout and you hardly even realized it until you got out.
