Timers will shut off hydrant sprinklers

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City children who love running through playground sprinklers better soak it up while they can.

The city plans to install water-saving devices on the sprinklers that now run nonstop.

The city's parks departments and the Department of Environmental Protection demonstrated the system at the Glendale Playground in Queens on Thursday.

A timer shuts off the sprinklers after two minutes. Pushing an activation button restarts the spray.

Twenty-three more playground sprinklers will be retrofitted by next summer. A total of 400 will get the new system by 2017.

The city says the timers will save a total of 1.5 million gallons a day.
