Authorities are searching for the suspects who have stolen manhole covers from the streets of 4 Long Island communities.
Highway Superintendent William Naughton says nine covers were removed in the past week from Greenlawn, Northport, Huntington and Huntington Station.
He says it's not unusual to see a manhole cover stolen occasionally. According to Newsday in the past few months the agency has had to replace about 20 of the cast-iron covers. Some are taken from the middle of the road, making driving more treacherous.
Naughton says it costs about $400 to replace each cover.
