Newark Airport security lapses prompt meetings

Emergency high-level meetings between the Port Authority Police Department and the Transportation Security Administration are already underway to iron out the TSA's troubling security lapses at Newark Liberty Airport.

Fox 5 News has learned that one of the most powerful members of Congress, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., is ready to go all out to make sure passengers get the protection they deserve.

Newark Liberty is one of the busiest international airports in the country. But it was the scene of a travel nightmare for thousands of people stuck in a standstill last Sunday. Terminal C was shut down for 3 hours after a woman set off an alarm for explosives residue on her hand and then slipped through a checkpoint and onto a plane without being screened.

There were two other incidents.

King said it is a disturbing pattern that can't be tolerated.

The PAPD and the Essex County bomb squad handled the incidents.

King wrote a 2-page letter to the head of the TSA demanding detailed explanations by August 20. If he is not satisfied with the answers, he said he won't hesitate to hold hearings.

King said if the TSA doesn't make improvement, he will ask the head of homeland security to cut off the TSA's funding.

The TSA had no comment for us except to confirm the security breaches.
