Details emerge in L.I. deadly boating incident

Posted: Updated:

The parents of a girl killed in a July 4th boating accident are urging action to prevent further tragedies.

An attorney for Lisa and Paul Gaines of Huntington spoke for them at Wednesday's New York Senate committee hearing in Oyster Bay, Long Island.

The parents sat by his side. They called for initiatives to enact capacity limits on all vessels. They also want mandatory safety training courses.

Their 7-year-old daughter Victoria was one of three children who died when a 34-foot vessel capsized in Oyster Bay following a fireworks display. Investigators are still working to determine a cause for the accident.

Preliminary inspections found the boat to be mechanically and structurally sound, reported Newsday.

There were also reportedly enough life jackets on board for all the passengers.

Seventeen adults and 10 children were aboard the vessel. The operator has said a large wave may have been the cause.

Others testifying include representatives from the state parks, Nassau County police, and boating safety organizations.
